The No Surprises Act

Here’s what you need to know:

Introduction to the No Surprises Act

The No Surprises Act, which went into effect on January 1, 2022, is designed to protect consumers from unexpected medical bills and provide transparency regarding healthcare costs. At Catullo Counseling, we are committed to compliance with this legislation to ensure our clients have clear and accurate information regarding the costs of our therapy and counseling services.

Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills

Under the No Surprises Act, you are protected from surprise billing or balance billing when you receive emergency care or are treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center. These protections also extend to non-emergency services provided by out-of-network providers at in-network facilities in certain situations.

Good Faith Estimate

As part of the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges for non-emergency services. This estimate will include the total expected cost of any non-emergency services or items provided by Catullo Counseling.

  • When You Can Expect a Good Faith Estimate: You can request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling a service or at any time during your care. If you are not insured or are self-paying for your services, we will provide this estimate to help you understand your potential financial responsibility.
  • Contents of a Good Faith Estimate: The estimate will detail the expected charges for the services you will receive, including any potential additional costs. It is important to note that this is an estimate, and actual charges may vary based on the specifics of your treatment and any changes in your care plan.

Steps to Take If You Receive an Unexpected Bill

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill.

  • Contact Us: If you receive a bill that exceeds your Good Faith Estimate by $400 or more, contact Catullo Counseling immediately to discuss the discrepancy.
  • Dispute Resolution: You may also start a dispute resolution process with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). To initiate this process, you must submit a request within 120 calendar days of receiving the bill.
